INFOGRAPHIC: The Origins Of Skype’s Name And Other Milestones

Skype has come a long way since its meager beginnings. Like all companies, it was at one point just a tiny spark of an idea. So how did Skype get to be a video chatting communication powerhouse that was acquired by Microsoft?

We reported last week on an infographic that detailed Skype’s life in depth from buy-outs to financial losses, but this week we bring you a simpler infographic from OnlineMBA.com that shows Skype’s major milestones and some interesting info.

One of the most interesting facts the infographic shows us is how Skype was named. It’s a shortened version of “Sky Peer-to-Peer” but when the domain name “Skyper” was already taken, they settled on “Skype.” Could you imagine saying “Skyper me later?” “Skype me” rolls effortlessly off the tongue. Another interesting fact: the service was based on Kazaa’s peer-to-peer software, hence the name (Do you remember Kazaa? How many songs did you illegally download using that?).

Skype is undoubtedly a hugely popular service despite its financial troubles in 2007. At the end of 2010 it had 663 million users, which at the time was about 63 million more than social networking giant Facebook. On March 28, 2011 Skype broke its all time record of most users around the world using the service — there were 30 million at one time!
