INFOGRAPHIC: Are Men Better Social Networkers Than Women?

Who is better at social networking: men or women? The battle of the sexes is an age old divide and it’s always fun to look at the statistics. Is a woman naturally better at applying makeup than a man or is that just a misnomer? Can a woman be a better truck driver?

It’s a toss up, but according to a new report from LinkedIn, men are better social networkers. To that I say, really? Come on! I’d like to think of myself as an excellent social networker, but perhaps I’m just well-trained and that’s not typical. I do after all write for this blog.

LinkedIn‘s Infographic measures overall savviness of the sexes in specific industries by calculating the ratio of the connections that males have and the ratio of connections that females have. The ratio of male and female LinkedIn users is also a factor. The top 5 industries where males utilized social networking the best are Medical Practice, Hospital and Healthcare, Law Enforcement, Capital Markets and Cosmetics. Yes, Cosmetics — as in makeup and skin care. Who would have thought?

Women also dominated some areas too, even if men took the lead overall. The top 5 industries for female social networking savviness are Alternative Dispute Resolution, Tobacco, Alternative Medicine, Ranching and International Trade. It’s awesome to see women pushing their way through stereotypically male dominated industries like Tobacco and Ranching!

Of course these statistics aren’t necessarily 100 percent fact and there are a bunch of reasons why the results could have turned out this way. Maybe men prefer networking over the Internet and women prefer personal, real-life relationships because women tend to share more on their social networks. Factors like the mentality of each of the genders — who’s more competitive and who’s more willing to put themselves out there on a social network like LinkedIn — certainly played a role in the results.

What do you think? Are men really better social networkers?
