INFOGRAPHIC: Who Uses Twitter and Why?
Since 2006, Twitter has seen tons of tweets from everyone from celebrities to the average Joe and about everything from breaking news to what’s for lunch. A whopping 460,000 new accounts are created a day and 177 million tweets are sent a day on average. That’s a whole lot of tweeting, but who’s behind it and what do they talk about?
According to an infographic by BuySellAds, roughly 8 percent of Internet users in the U.S. tweet and surprisingly that’s not the highest percentage of Twitter users if you look at it globally. The Netherlands and Japan have the highest ratio of Twitter users — 26.8 percent of Internet users in the Netherlands tweet and 26.6 percent of Internet users in Japan tweet. Why the U.S. hasn’t utilized the social network as much as other countries?
The infographic also describes the average Twitter. The average user is a 20-something Hispanic female who went to college, lives in a city and makes less than $30,000 per year or between $50,000-70,000 per year. That user mostly uses the service to keep in touch with friends and post status updates and most of their tweets are comprised of personal updates, work updates and links to news stories. That user is also likely to check Twitter several times a day, less often than every few weeks or not at all.
