STUDY: Google+ May Be Bigger Than Twitter, LinkedIn Within 12 Months

Since its launch at the end of June, Google+ has been growing at a rapid pace. The service was confirmed to have more than 10 million users after just 2 weeks and recent estimates put the user base at above 20 million. The service’s website has also been reportedly visited by more than 25 million people.

According to a survey carried out by Bloomberg, Google+ could become the second biggest social network within the next year, moving past Twitter and LinkedIn. Around 13 percent of adults in the U.S. have signed up to Google+ and another 9 percent will join over the next 12 months. Facebook looks set to lose 2 percent of U.S. adults to fall to 69 percent of that demographic, while Twitter and LinkedIn will continue to grow to around 20 percent of the U.S. adult population each.

Of the survey respondents who said that they had joined Google+, 45 percent say that they are reading content on the service every day, compared with 62 percent of Facebook users who view content on that service. Twitter is visited daily by 42 percent of its users while just 8 percent of LinkedIn users visit that service each day.

As Google+ grows, it will likely have a negative impact on Facebook. Around 30 percent of those who are using both services say that they are planning to reduce the amount of time they are spending on Facebook. However, Google+ might have a problem with user retention as 31 percent of those who have signed up have ditched their accounts or have yet to make any posts.

If Google+ is to overtake LinkedIn, then it has a lot of work to do as the professional social network confirmed in its quarterly earnings report Thursday that it has more than 115 million users. Twitter has more than 200 million accounts, while Facebook has more than 750 million monthly active users. Although these are slightly different ways of measuring how many users each service has, it is clear that Google+ has gotten off to a tremendous start — even if it has a long way to go to catch up with its competitors.
