Facebook Updates Messenger Mobile App, Launches BlackBerry Version

Facebook has rolled out an update for its Messenger app on iPhone and Android devices. The app offers several new features including the ability to see which of your friends are online. The social network has also launched a BlackBerry version of the app.

In addition to seeing which of your friends are online and which are using their mobile devices, the updated Android and iPhone apps allow you to see when another person is typing and send messages to the people you message most often even faster. The iPhone version of the app now supports 12 additional languages, while the Android app offers support for an extra 22 languages. There are various performance improvements that have been made to the app too.

The Messenger app was launched in August with the aim of helping you message your friends and small groups faster. You can use the app to communicate with your Facebook friends and people who are in your phone’s contact list (via SMS). The app is a standalone version of Facebook messages, so you can access all of your texts, emails, chats and messages from conversations you have had with your Facebook friends.

You can use location mapping to view where the people in a conversation are located, while you have the option to share photos with your contacts too. Meanwhile, you are able to attach a name and a picture to your group conversations to help you keep track of who you’re talking to.

Messenger is the first standalone app that Facebook has launched outside of the main Facebook app, but another may be on the way in the form of a dedicated photo-sharing app. Messenger was launched 5 months after the social network acquired group messaging app Beluga.

Aside from the launch of the app on BlackBerry, perhaps the most significant thing in this update is the addition of several new languages. This should certainly help to increase adoption of Messenger in a variety of markets.

You can download the app on your Blackberry by visiting the Messenger page on Facebook from your mobile device. Alternatively, you can grab the latest version of the app on your iPhone or Android device.
