President Obama Rallies Twitter Followers Over Debt Ceiling, Urges Them To Tweet GOP Lawmakers

With crisis talks over the U.S. debt ceiling issue continuing, President Barack Obama took to Twitter Friday morning to ask his followers for their support in helping to reach a compromise between the Democrats and the Republicans.

After he posted his tweet, the president’s social media team took back control of the account and started to tweet the Twitter handles of Republican legislators. The hope is that Obama’s followers will tweet those lawmakers and encourage them to reach an agreement with Democrats on how best to handle the debt ceiling issue.

It was revealed last month that Obama would start posting signed tweets himself on the social network. He posted his very first signed tweet during a Twitter townhall event, where he was posed questions submitted to him through Twitter.

This is an interesting way to galvanize U.S. citizens into action to help legislators come to an agreement on how to handle the crisis. It will be fascinating to see how it all plays out. At the very least, it marks a sharp tonal shift from the official White House Twitter account Rickrolling a follower.

The time for putting party first is over. If you want to see a bipartisan #compromise, let Congress know. Call. Email. Tweet. —BO
